Helpful Tips for Preparing to Move

AKA Some things I learned the hard way so you don’t have to

  1. When you plan out your packing timeline, make sure to block off several hours each day for miscellaneous things that pop up. That way you’re not panicking when you’re trying to adhere to a schedule but shopping takes three hours instead of one or a family member ends up in the hospital and you end up visiting them every day.
  2. Don’t wait until the day before to pack your clothes. You may think it’s going to go quickly, but you won’t be thinking that when you hit hour five and you unearth one more basket of shirts that you forgot you put aside
  3. Always go through pockets and compartments of clothes and bags before you pack them. You may groan about how much time it takes now, but you won’t be groaning anymore when you find that $120 that you didn’t realize was still in that backpack
  4. Start collecting boxes early. The great thing about cardboard is if you don’t end up using it, you can recycle it.
  5. Along the same lines, even if you’re like me and prefer everything to be the same, take any box you can get. That perfect box type that you have six of may not actually fit anything you were planning on putting in it, and having all different boxes also makes it easier to identify what went into each box.
  6. Box. EVERYTHING. For starters, this makes things infinitely easier when you’re unloading the car, and even more important? It gives you a place to temporarily store things once you get to the apartment and realize you don’t have room for everything yet.
